PROTEST AGAINST AHCCCS CUTS TO PODIATRY CARE TO BE HELD THIS SUNDAY
Methodist Church Group will wash the feet of homeless Tucsonans to "Save Soles"
Members and supporters of the homeless community will hold a protest this coming Sunday, July 11th, 2010 from 11 a.m. to noon to demonstrate against the proposed cuts to state-funded podiatry care by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), Arizona's Medicaid agency. This foot-washing protest will be held at the worship service and homeless feeding project sponsored by the WORKship Methodist Church in the courtyard of the Z Mansion at 288 North Church Avenue in downtown Tucson.
"AHCCCS has announced they are cutting wound care provided to the poor by podiatrists," reveals WORKship minister Amy Heithaus. "This means that many poor Tucsonans with diabetes in Tucson will suffer gruesome amputations caused by untreated diabetic lesions. The purpose of this foot-washing project by our church will be to identify untreated diabetic foot lesions in members of the homeless community and to protest this irrational cut in health care for the poor."
"The act of foot-washing is highly symbolic within the Christian church," says WORKship minister Tom Hill. "Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, foot-washing is mentioned in Genesis and 1 Samuel, and the earliest Christian groups practiced this ritual regularly. In every instance the purpose was the same: to show the deepest respect and support for the person whose feet were being washed. Our job is to show true respect to our community's poorest members, use this opportunity to identify untreated diabetic lesions, and then get these lesions treated before October 1st when AHCCCS cuts funding for diabetic foot care by podiatrists. It's our way of calling attention to this health care travesty as we, literally, attempt to save soles."
